Hanauma Bay is O‘ahu’s premier snorkeling area.

S Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve

Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve (7455 Kalanianaole Hwy., 808/395-2211 or 808/396-4229, www.hanaumabaystatepark.com, 6am-7pm Wed.-Mon., $7.50 admission, $1 parking) is the first Marine Life Conservation District in the state and the most popular snorkeling site on O‘ahu. Located just to the east of Koko Head on the southeast shore, the bay lies within a volcanic cone with a semicircular beach and fingers of shallow reef that stretch from the edge of the bay all the way to the beach. After decades of preservation after rampant overuse, Hanauma Bay now boasts about 400 species of fish and an abundance of green sea turtles. Keep in mind that the water close to shore can get quite crowded with snorkelers and you’ll have to swim a ways out to find some territory to yourself. If you’re driving in, arrive as early as possible, as the parking lot usually fills to capacity by 10am and cars are turned away till others leave, usually around 2pm. You can bring your own snorkel gear, or snorkel sets are available to rent for $20 per day. There are also food concessions at the beach. Visitors are required to view a short film and presentation about the preserve and proper etiquette while snorkeling. Admission is free for children under 13 and Hawai‘i residents. There is also a 3.5-hour tour available on the state sponsored website that includes roundtrip Waikiki transportation, snorkel set and a narrated tour to the bay for $22. There is also a tram from the parking lot to the beach ($1 down, $1.25 up).
